Făgăraș Mountains (Southern Carpathians), August 2015.

Făgăraș Mountains are the highest among the Southern Carpathian group, the highest peak being Vârful Moldoveanu (2544m). This is the most iconic mountain chain of Transylvania, its intense, dark forests and serrated ridges with cloud scraping peaks evoke legends of Vlad Țepeș and vampire tales.

Around 1970, Nicolae Ceaușescu decided to build a strategic road through this rugged landscape, an expensive endeavour that was completed in 1974. Its cost in resources and human lives was rightfully criticized by many, but nevertheless today this road enables countless visitors to see this monumental mountain chain up close.
