Bač Fortress

Written traces about Bač as a location exist from as early as 6th century, in the letter written by Justinian I. Later the settlement changed hands between native residents and some barbarian tribes like Avars and Mongols. The fortified castle of Bač was built by Robert of Anjou in 14th century on a small island of the Mostonga river. The site was strategically selected so that the wide river bed can serve as a natural defense. Normally the fortress could be reached by mobile bridges that spanned across wet marshes which posed a considerable obstacle to potential invaders. It fell to Ottoman Turks in 1529. after the Mohač Battle. Its final destruction took place at the beginning of the 18th century, and it was not repaired any more.

Today the fortress is open to visitors, and maintained as a monument. The central tower has been restored recently and serves as a visitor center with an archaeological exhibition.
