Zlatar Mountain and Uvac river lakes, May 2016.
Zlatar mountain is located in south-western Serbia, and roughly marks the boundary between geologically older mountains of central Serbia, and the younger Dinarides. Its summit is 1625m high and not very prominent, as most of the mountain body is composed of interchanging highlands and hills. Zlatar is notable for its magnificent dark coniferous forest and vast areas of unspoiled wilderness.
Not far away is river Uvac which carved a series of deep canyons in the soft limestone bedrock, but most of these are submerged today in the artificial lakes built for power generation. A total of three lakes exist here: Sjeničko, Zlatarsko and Radonjsko. These forever changed the natural look and equilibrium of this area, and criticism still exist among scholars today for the past communist government that initiated this project. But regardless of that, this area stands as one of the most beautiful in Serbia.
The most notable animal of this area is the "Beloglavi Sup" (Griffon vulture, Gyps fulvus), a large scavenger bird of prey with an approx. wingspan of 2.5m. It is under strict state protection as it is quite endangered by human activity.
